DEBBY ROBINSON, MEDIEVAL NEEDLEPOINT- TWENTY FOUR EASY TO MAKE PROJECTS FOR THE HOME-COLLINS & BROWN LTD. LONDON (1992)

The fantastic mission of Debby Robinson is to bring to live medieval designs for the embroiderer of our days who seeks to reproduce the Medieval illuminator designs in a contemporary utilitarian manner,

" In this book, the motifs and designs used as decorative detail by the illuminators of medieval manuscripts have been reinterpreted for the modern day worker needlepoint. Many of these manuscripts were religious in theme- Gospels, Psalters and Books of Hours, meant as aids to private devotion - so the decorative element was confined to the margins, while the main image was often the biblical scene"
in page 8, ' Introduction : The Medieval Heritage.

However this relationship between illuminator and needlework is not something new . In fact the author cites two instances in history where illuminators and historical embroidery have intertwined  ,
"The relationship between the arts of manuscript illumination and needlework is particularly close where painters were involved in the design, as in the ecclesiastical embroidery known as Opus Anglicanum, (...)" in page 10 , 'Introduction : The Medieval Heritage

"The Bayeux Tapestry, for instance, is thought to have been designed and drawn by members of the Canterbury school of manuscript painters". in page 11, Introduction : The Medieval Heritage

All designs in this book are related to images created during the medieval period in the textile arts , Ecclesiastical arts and the lives of important historical figures.

Medieval Needlepoint by Debby Robinson is a book that will save you money - no need to buy kits-, will make you fall in love and guide you in the elaboration of stunning valuable projects for your home like curtain pelmets and tie-backs.

The patters are unique, medieval and easy to make. You will only need canvas, thread and needle.

Will enrich you culturally and historically as contains much information about the past days of needlepoint and embroidery in the homes.
