* 1885 Dictionary of Needlework by S.F. A. CAULFIELD clarifies material used in crochet hooks does not mean evolution of crochet hooks

"Before commencing, be careful to select a hook suitable in size to the cotton or wool , and one that is firmly made and smooth. Wool crochet is done with bone hooks, and cotton and silk crochet with steel hooks" in " Crochet" , Dictionary of Needlework

" Tambour Needles - These Needles resemble those employed for Crochet Work, and known also as Shepherds' Hooks. They are, however, smaller, and invariably of steel, and are very commonly made of the length of a medium-sized sewing needle. A small handle of suitable size is sold with it, into which it is securely fixed by means of a small thumb screw, and can be released at pleasure, should it be broken. This handle, which is made of ivory, bone, or wood, is hollow, and the opposite end can be unscrewed to supply a receptacle for a small stock of needles" in  ' Tambour Needles' , Dictionary of Needlework

Best wishes,
